Mariet Feltkamp appointed professor in Medical Microbiology

Mariet Feltkamp has been appointed endowed professor of Medical Microbiology, with a focus on preventing the transmission of viral infections through blood transfusion and organ transplantation. Her chair connects Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) and Sanquin Blood Supply. This dual position reflects the breadth of her work, which ranges from selecting and testing donors to improving the resilience of transplant recipients.

Annemieke Geluk awarded Eijkman medal 2026

Prof Dr Annemieke Geluk, LUCID-R, LUMC, has been awarded the 2026 Eijkman Medal in recognition of her outstanding contributions to global health! The Eijkman medal is awarded once every 2 years by the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) to someone whom has contributed strongly to tropical or global health, in particular in low and middle income countries.

PhD Defence: Josiane Honkpehedji

On the 3rd of March we celebrated Josiane Honkpéhèdji's successful defence of her thesis, titled: 'Endemic parasitic infections during pregnancy and their impact on clinical and immunological outcomes in Gabon'. She completed her PhD under supervision of prof. Yazdanbakhsh, prof. Hokke and prof. Adegnika (CERMEL).

Horizon Europe funding for REPHRAME consortium

The REPHRAME consortium proposal, including Georg Zeller and Merel Lambregts from LUCID, has been awarded Horizon Europe funding under the HORIZON‑HLTH ‑2025‑01‑DISEASE‑01 call, with approximately €750,000 allocated to LUMC.

Pneumonia study with Malawi collaborators

LUCID researchers dr. Dennis Hoving, Alicia de Kroon, dr. Simon Jochems, and Godwin Tembo at the Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Research Programme, studied how adults in Malawi respond to PCV13. This vaccine protects against multiple types of pneumococcal bacteria that can cause pneumonia and other serious infections. Although the vaccine has reduced disease overall, one type (serotype 3) continues to spread, especially in high-transmission settings.
