BeNeFit grant for clinical study neurosyfilis

Internist-infectiologist dr. Anna Roukens (LUCID-I) has received a BeNeFit grant together with colleague Chris Kenyon (Institute of Tropical Medicine Antwerp, Belgium). They will lead a project in which 30 medical centers in the Netherlands and Belgium will participate in a clinical multicenter study to investigate the best and most patient-friendly treatment for neurosyphilis.

In the study, oral antibiotic treatment will be compared to intravenous treatment. If oral treatment turns out to be the better option, this will have major implications worldwide, since it would mean that patients suffering from neurosyfilis no longer have to be admitted to hospitals for treatment.

Of the total of 2 million euros of the BeNeFit grant, 915.000 euros will go to LUCID. In our department, dr. Jessica Vlot and Chanel Naar will work on this project as trial coordinators. Dr. Roukens is project leader for the participating Dutch medical centers. "It’s a lot of work but it will definitely be worth it, and I am very much looking forward to working together with Jessica and Chanel on this project”, she says.
