Dr. Rajagopal Murugan awarded the Boehringer Ingelheim Award

Ahead of the Dutch Society of Parasitology's Spring scientific meeting, the recipient of the Boehringer Ingelheim Award for Parasitology 2026 has been announced as Dr. Rajagopal Murugan!

Dr. Rajagopal Murugan awarded the Boehringer Ingelheim Award

As the leader of the Molecular Immunology group within LUCID Research, he has contributed significantly to the world-renowned malaria vaccine development taking place at Leiden University Medical Centre. Looking into the immune response to malaria and helminth parasites at a deep molecular level using single-cell technologies and computational pipelines, Gopal's group is contributing to the design of next-generation vaccines by defining the fundamental principles behind immune memory.

The society representative added, "The jury was unanimous in their decision and praised Dr. Murugan for his excellent publication record on identifying B-cell and antibody responses to malaria parasite infections and vaccinations. While still at the start of his career as an independent research group leader, he is already well established at the Leiden University Medical Centre, extending his expertise to study the origin and development of the B cell responses during helminth infections."

He will be presented with the award during the opening of the joint scientific Spring meeting of the Netherlands and Belgium parasitology societies (NVP & BSPP), held on the 20th-21st May in Antwerp. Following this, he will deliver the Boehringer Ingelheim Lecture detailing his previous and current research, with the title “Adaptive Immunity to Malaria: From Fundamentals to Vaccines”.

Introduced in 1996, the Boehringer Ingelheim Award is a competitive prize for talented researchers who have made innovative contributions to the fields of veterinary or (bio)medical parasitology. Former laureates include LUCID members, Prof. Meta Roestenberg (2018), Dr. Bart Everts (2020), Dr. Lisette van Lieshout (1999), and Prof. Maria Yazdanbakhsh (1997).
