Our research is driven by the goal of generating high-impact outcomes with strong translational and societal value. We leverage innovative metagenomic sequencing approaches to improve viral detection, characterization, and surveillance. Our work is highly multidisciplinary, integrating metagenomics, genomics, and host transcriptomics to study viral diversity, virus discovery, and within-host viral evolution. In our evolutionary analyses, we apply advanced statistical and computational models—including approaches originating from other scientific fields—to better understand viral dynamics and evolutionary processes. By combining (meta)genomic data generation with predictive modeling and integrative data science approaches, we aim to support the development of improved diagnostic and public health strategies. Our research bridges fundamental discovery with clinical and public health applications, contributing to more effective responses to emerging and re-emerging viral threats.
